Privacy Policy
This statement explains how Hooves collects and uses personal information. Effective 25 September 2026.
Who is responsible
Hooves is personally operated in New Zealand. Contact support@hooves.co.nz for privacy questions or to reach the privacy officer.
Information we collect
If you create an account, Clerk handles sign-in and provides Hooves with your account identifier and profile details such as your name, email address, and profile image. Google or Facebook may provide those details when you choose social sign-in. We collect the listings, animal descriptions, photos, prices, locations, contact preferences, messages, and saved animals you submit. We may receive technical information needed to operate and secure the site, such as IP address, device or browser information, and request logs from our service providers.
Why we use it
We use this information to sign you in, display and search listings, let buyers and sellers communicate, remember saved animals and seller contact defaults, provide support, prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations. An account is needed to post, save animals, or send messages; you can browse published listings without one. Listing details and a New Zealand postcode are needed to post so buyers can understand and locate the animals approximately. Optional phone, email, and private pickup details can be omitted.
Who can see it
Published listings, including animal details, photos, seller display name, district, region, and postcode, can be seen by anyone. Before a photo is uploaded, it is resized and the information cameras embed in it, such as GPS location, the time it was taken, and the camera model, is removed. A seller may choose to show a listing phone number or email to everyone, signed-in visitors, or nobody. The account email is not published automatically. Messages are available to their participants and may be accessed by Hooves when needed for support, safety, or legal reasons. Exact pickup addresses and instructions are held privately for the seller; arrange any disclosure directly with the buyer.
Service providers and location
Clerk provides authentication, Cloudflare hosts the site, stores listing photos, and processes requests, and Supabase stores other Hooves data. These providers may process or store information outside New Zealand. Hooves data is kept in a separate schema within a Supabase project shared with other products. We may disclose information when required by law or reasonably necessary to investigate misuse or protect people and animals.
Storage and retention
We use access controls and other reasonable safeguards. We keep information while it is needed to operate your account and the marketplace, resolve disputes, address safety issues, or meet legal obligations. Deleting an account may not immediately remove copies already seen or saved by others, and some records may need to be retained for legal or safety reasons.
Your choices and rights
You can request access to or correction of personal information we hold about you. You can also ask us to delete your Hooves account and associated data. Email support@hooves.co.nz from the address on your account; we may verify your identity before acting. See the Delete account page for the process. You may also contact the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner if you have an unresolved concern.
Changes
We may update this statement as Hooves changes. The effective date at the top will change when we do. If a change materially affects how we use existing information, we will take appropriate steps to notify affected users.
